Lesson Information/Structure

Did you know?
Because 86% of drownings occur when a child is fully clothed, it is vital that your child know how to perform their skills while fully clothed.

What is ISR Self-Rescue®?
For more than 50 years, Infant Swimming Resource (ISR) has been going beyond traditional swim instruction. ISR teaches children how to survive in the water. Depending on your child’s age, your child will learn different levels of ISR Self-Rescue® skills, including a roll-back-to-float and/or a swim-float-swim.
Your child's classes are 5 days a week, Monday - Friday for approximately 6 weeks. Each class will be a maximum of 10 minutes with just one child and me in the water. Much is accomplished in each short private lesson. Your child will have the same 10-minute time slot each day, teaching children  critical ISR Self-Rescue® skills - giving children the competence and confidence to safely enjoy the water. ISR’s technique teaches babies from 6 months to 6 years of age how to save themselves if they were to reach the the water alone. Your child is not the only one who will learn during lessons. Infant Swimming Resource’s program includes comprehensive parent education on aquatic safety and drowning prevention.

Ages 6 - 12 months

Infants in this age range will learn to hold their breath underwater, roll onto their back and maintain the floating position.  Once highly skilled, your baby has an opportunity to practice these skills fully-clothed.

Young children in this age range learn to swim with their head down, roll onto their back to breathe and rest, and then turn back over to continue swimming.  This sequence can be repeated so the young child can swim to a wall or an edge.  Once skilled, children have an opportunity to practice their ISR Self-Rescue® skills while fully clothed.

Maintenance Lessons
Upon completion of the initial lessons, regular fine-tuning of your child's skills is highly recommended.  Maintenance lessons can be once a week, once a month, or whatever frequency suits your schedule.  Maintenance lessons can alleviate the need for a full refresher later.

Refresher Classes
Upon completion of their initial lessons, every child should take a short 2-3 week refresher course the following year to help them adjust to their new body size in the water and re-evaluate their skill set 6-12 months after the initial lessons.
